Dating a Moroccan person can mean switching between Darija, French and English in one evening, drinking mint tea poured from very high, and hearing about a wedding that lasts several days. Here's what helps to know.

Dating a Moroccan person means more than one language

Many Moroccans speak Darija at home, French at school and English at work. Some also grew up with Tamazight, the Amazigh language, from their grandparents. Darija is its own thing, and Arabs from the Middle East often need a moment to follow it.

You don't need to speak any of it. But learning a few Darija words, like "bslama" (bye) or "bezzaf" (a lot), will make the family smile.

Arab, Amazigh, or both

Morocco isn't only Arab. Many families are Amazigh, many are both, and people feel strongly about it. Some will tell you they're Moroccan first. Ask how your partner describes their roots instead of assuming.

Mint tea is a ritual

Mint tea is poured from high above the glass to make foam, and it's usually sweet. It's served to guests, after meals and during long conversations. Turning it down without a good reason can seem cold.

Friday couscous at the family home is a fixed event in many households. If you're invited, go.

Moroccan weddings are a production

If things get serious, you'll hear about the wedding. Many Moroccan weddings include a henna night, a negafa who dresses the bride, and several outfit changes into different caftans and takchitas. They can last more than one day.

Not every couple does all of it. Some keep it small, especially here. Talk with your partner about what both families expect before planning starts.

Montreal, New York and beyond

Moroccans in North America live in many places, but Montreal has one of the biggest communities, and French makes it easy. In the US, there are communities in New York, New Jersey, the DC area, Boston and Florida.
