What is halal dating?

Ask ten Muslims what halal dating means and you'll get ten answers, a few of them from aunties. Here's what most people mean by it, and how to keep it that way when you meet someone through an app.
Halal dating is getting to know someone with marriage in mind, in a way that stays inside Islamic limits. That's the short version. The details depend on who you ask, and that's worth knowing before you start.
What halal dating usually means
Most people who use the phrase agree on a few things:
- You're looking for a spouse, and both of you know it.
- No physical intimacy before nikah. For many, that means no touching at all.
- No khalwa, being alone together in private. People meet in cafes, with friends, or with family nearby.
- Family gets involved, sometimes from day one, sometimes once it's serious. Some women involve a wali, usually their father or brother.
Where people differ is the rest. Is texting every day okay? What about a coffee with no one else at the table? Families answer that differently, and so do scholars. This guide doesn't settle it. Do what you and your family are comfortable with.
Halal dating on an app
Plenty of Muslim couples met on an app. What makes it halal or not is everything after the match. A few things help:
- Say what you want up front. If you want marriage, put it on your profile so nobody wastes your time.
- Keep chats in the app. You don't have to hand out your number. Share it when you're ready.
- Meet in public, like a busy cafe or a family event.
- Bring family in when it's right for you. That might be the first week or the third month.
How HeyArab fits
HeyArab isn't a religious app. Arabs of every faith use it. But if you want to keep things halal, the pieces are there:
- Pick marriage as what you're looking for, and add a timeline if you have one.
- Put Muslim on your profile, and your sect if you want: Sunni, Shia, Sufi or Ibadi.
- Filter for Muslims. Turn on the dealbreaker switch and it works both ways: you only see Muslims, and people outside your filter don't see you.
- Say your family is involved from the start, so your match knows before the first message.
There's no chaperone mode. If that matters a lot to you, Muzz has one. For more on using HeyArab as a Muslim, read a Muslim dating app for Arab singles.
