Iraqi dating app for Iraqi singles in the US

Ask two Iraqis in Michigan where they're from and you might get Baghdad, Basra, Mosul or a village near Tel Keppe. HeyArab is an Iraqi dating app that lets you say exactly which Iraq you mean.

Two istikan glasses of dark tea on saucers, a plate of kleicha and a bowl of dates

Iraqi singles in Detroit, San Diego and everywhere between

Metro Detroit has one of the oldest Iraqi communities in the country. Chaldean families have been there since the early 1900s, and many now live in Sterling Heights and West Bloomfield. Dearborn has a large Iraqi Shia community. Out west, El Cajon near San Diego has so many Iraqis that people call it Little Baghdad. Many others arrived after 1991 and after 2003, and settled in Arizona, Texas, Tennessee and Virginia.

Iraqi families are Shia, Sunni, Chaldean Catholic, Assyrian or Syriac Christian, and more. On HeyArab you can show religion and denomination, with Chaldean Catholic and the Assyrian Church of the East in the list, and add your community: Arab, Chaldean, Assyrian or Kurdish. Each one is optional, and you decide what to share.

Iraqi dating starts with chai

At an Iraqi house, the tea comes in an istikan before you sit down properly, and someone has already put out dolma or kleicha. You want a person who knows that refusing a second glass is a negotiation.

A 30 second voice intro lets people hear your Baghdadi, your southern accent or the Sureth your grandparents speak at home. Prompts like "At home we speak…" and "My family's from… but home also means…" give you room to explain the rest.

The aunties already have a list

In a big Iraqi community, news travels faster than you do. Go to one wedding in Sterling Heights or El Cajon and three aunties will have a name for you by the time the cake comes out. Some of those names are great. Some are their nephews.

If you'd rather meet people on your own first, your profile says so. Choose how involved your family is, from right there at the start to private until it's serious. And if your mother's whole contact list lives in your phone, you can hide your profile from those numbers.

Masgouf, Eid and the long drive to a hafla

Ask an Iraqi what they miss and the answers are specific. Masgouf grilled by the river. Kahi and geymar for breakfast. The chai stand on a Baghdad street. For people who grew up here, it might be the one restaurant in town that gets the tashreeb right.

Iraqis also travel for a good party. A wedding two states away is a normal weekend plan. "A wedding isn't a wedding without" is the prompt for that, and most Iraqi answers involve a choobi line and a DJ who refuses to stop.

Questions

Can I say I'm Chaldean, Assyrian or Kurdish?
Yes. Profiles have an optional community field next to country of origin, with Chaldean, Assyrian and Kurdish among the choices. It shows on your profile and is never used as a filter.
Is Sureth on the language list?
Yes, as Sureth (Aramaic). Kurdish is there too, so you can list every language you grew up hearing.
Can I pick Chaldean Catholic as my church?
Yes. Chaldean Catholic, Syriac Orthodox and the Assyrian Church of the East are all in the denomination list, next to Shia and Sunni.
