Dating a Syrian man or woman, what to actually expect

Dating a Syrian person usually means hearing a lot about one city, eating more kibbeh than you planned, and meeting a family that takes hosting very seriously. Some Syrians grew up here. Others arrived in the last ten years. Both shape what dating looks like.
Dating a Syrian person starts with "which city?"
Ask a Syrian where they're from and you'll rarely hear just "Syria". It's Damascus, Aleppo, Homs, Hama, Latakia, Sweida, Deir ez-Zor, or a village their family can describe street by street. The city says a lot about the food, the accent and the family's habits. Damascenes and Aleppans will happily argue about whose kibbeh is better.
Families are Sunni, Alawite, Druze, Ismaili, Christian of several churches, and more. Religion matters a lot to some families and very little to others. Ask early instead of guessing.
Two generations of Syrian Americans
Some Syrian Americans have grandparents who came here decades ago. Many others arrived after 2011, often after years in Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey or Germany. Those stories are different, and people carry them differently.
If your partner's family went through the war, let them decide when to talk about it. You don't need to understand all of it. You need to be patient on the days the news from home is bad.
The family will feed you
Syrian hosting is serious. Expect a table full of food, a host who keeps filling your plate, and coffee or tea after, whether you asked or not. Sweets from a good Damascene bakery, or a box of barazek, are a safe thing to bring.
Many Syrian parents want to meet a partner once things are serious, and some families still expect a formal visit to ask for a hand in marriage. Ask your partner what their family expects before it comes up.
Things that matter to a lot of Syrians
Family honor and reputation matter, especially in smaller communities where everyone knows everyone. Hard work matters too. Many Syrians here rebuilt careers from zero, and they respect people who do the same.
Humor helps. Syrian TV comedies are quoted in a lot of homes, and knowing one or two will get you a laugh.
